A Parent of Ram-Don (I) – Chapagetti
In Parasite, the Academy and Oscar Award-winning film created by South Korean movie director Bong Joon-ho, a signature noodle dish called Chapaguri was introduced and became popular not only among Koreans but also among viewers from many different countries.
Chapaguri now has an English name – Ram-Don – a dish that is even being served as a part of menu in some Korean restaurants in America. Ram-Don can actually be cooked fairly easily by combining two Korean ramen products: Chapagetti and Neoguri (both from the same manufacturer, Nongshim).
This article would like to briefly introduce one of Ram-Don’s parents – Chapagetti. Chapagetti, despite being one of the Korean “ramen” product series, is actually more of a “jajangmyeon” which is also known as Korean black bean sauce noodles.
With its widely appealing taste and affordability, jajangmyeon has long been loved by Koreans regardless of age and gender. It is still a popular choice of lunch especially after physical labor. There is even a custom of treating jajangmyeon to someone who helped you moving your stuffs to your new place as a token of gratitude!
Nongshim was the first company in South Korea to make jajangmyeon into instant food products beginning in 1970, and on March 1984, Chapagetti finally made its debut in the market. Even after more than thirty years, Chapagetti covers 90% of South Korea’s instant jajangmyeon market and is still ranked within Top 10 of among all instant ramen products in the country. Without exaggeration, it is indeed Korea’s No. 1 jajangmyeon-ramen brand.
With the famous advertising slogan, “I’m the Chapagetti chef on Sunday,” it once gave rise to the trend of Korean families eating Chapagetti for Sunday lunch. It goes well when cooked with small amount of thinly chopped lettuce, onion, or cucumber, and few small slices of beef, pork, or shrimp. It is certainly a dish that is not only quick and easy to cook, but also can adequately satisfy your tongue and belly!
